The New England Society for Continental Philosophy (NESCP) is a professional organization focused on supporting work in Continental philosophy and adjacent fields in the New England area. Continental philosophy describes a group of philosophical traditions focused on questions of subjectivity, experience, history, and culture. This includes sub-traditions like existentialism, hermeneutics, phenomenology, and poststructuralism. However, we understand Continental philosophy in the broadest sense possible, with specific interest in theories and traditions that have been overlooked within traditional Continental accounts. This includes Indigenous philosophy, queer and crip theory, critical philosophy of race, environmental philosophy, Black philosophy, Latin American existentialisms, and other associated traditions. Our aim is to build an accessible and supportive community for philosophers working in Continental philosophy, especially graduate students and early-career philosophers. We work to provide regional support particularly for philosophers in the New England and adjacent areas. We take seriously the material conditions of contemporary intellectual labor, including the ways that race, class, gender, sexuality, citizenship, and geography inform our experiences. In keeping with our inheritances from Continental philosophy, we are explicitly committed to actively supporting more just philosophies, relationships, and worlds. We strive to reflect our commitments in how our professional organization is run, and aim for our spaces to be supportive of all kinds of philosophers in and beyond the academy. |
