Mission Statement
Philosophy and Religion in Africana Traditions (PRAT) is an organization of philosophers and activists whose purpose is to explore the ways in which religion and philosophy, as ways of thought and practice in Africana traditions, upend the social, economic, and political disparities between Africana and European communities. PRAT has five objectives. First, we aim to increase exposure to new ways of understanding a multidisciplinary approach to philosophical exploration and cultural traditions. We encourage dialogue with other traditions outside of the Africana experience. Second, we work to bridge the gap between the professionalism of philosophical discourse and community activism. Third, we provide opportunities for mentoring undergraduate and junior scholars in or affiliated with philosophy. Fourth, we provide an intellectual space for philosophers of differing orientations to discuss their vision of society and human destiny We believe that the social, political, and economic disparities of Africana communities are the consequences of differing world views. Fifth, we foster communication among philosophers of Africana traditions regardless of place and history.
